These past few weeks I have been trying to incorporate more mindful practices in to my daily routines. As a busy student, entrepreneur and iPhone addict- being able to do these on my phone makes the whole process easier!
Here are my top 5 apps for mindfulness (in no particular order)
Some of these apps are paid apps or have subscriptions, I have paid for and subscribed to all of these, none of this post is sponsored in any way. Just my personal opinion!
Now I know I said that this list in no particular order- however, i must admit that this is the app I definitely use the most. The app itself is free and has some awesome free features but personally, I am paying for the monthly subscription. The app is a mindfulness/meditation app and is tailored more towards those suffering with anxiety. I personally struggle with anxiety and these last few weeks have been a lot higher stress than normal and I definitely needed some assistance in trying to calm myself down in some situations. The reason I love this app so much more than most guided meditation apps is because it has so many meditations specifically targeted for certain situations. For example, there are meditations you can be guided through if you feel like you’re having a panic attack, have a fear of flying, or need some help preparing your mind for a sporting competition. The app can be used for so many situations and I think that’s why it’s my favourite. Personally, I have been using the sleep meditations for when I’m struggling to calm my mind from all the stress late at night and it has truly helped me fall asleep. On nights where I feel like I am overthinking and having negative thoughts, I choose the ten minute sleep meditation and start following the instructions given. I honestly have yet to hear the end of the meditation as I have fallen asleep before it ends every time! Haha!
- FIVE MINUTE JOURNAL
Gratitude is so important and honestly, I am terrible at it. I have bought so many little gratitude journals and all of them have approximately two pages filled in, clearly I lack commitment with these things! However, I bought this app a couple months ago and I’ve remembered to fill it in every morning and every night and I truly do feel more grateful. It sends me a notification every morning at 8am and again at 10pm at night which is just after I wake up and before I go to sleep. In the morning it asks you to fill in the following:I AM GRATEFUL FOR…
3-WHAT WILL MAKE TODAY GREAT?
3-DAILY AFFIRMATIONS: I AM……..
and then at the end of the day it asks you to fill in the following and also attach a photo if you choose too!
AMAZING THINGS THAT HAPPENED TODAY:
HOW COULD I HAVE MADE TODAY EVEN BETTER?
It then stores it all like a journal so that you can go back and reflect on your entries from the past which I absolutely love, I think it’s incredible to be able to look back at the affirmations you made for yourself and compare them to where you are now!
3. SLEEP CYCLE
When my life is full of stress, my sleep is definitely what I sacrifice the most. This app not only helps you get to sleep but also allows you to wake up easier as well. I love this app becausee for me, it is a couple apps within one. It is an alarm clock, a sleep tracker and also has a feature that allows ambient sounds to be played as you’re falling asleep. I have always used a website called ‘rainymood‘ which allowed me to play the sounds of a thunderstorm whilst I fell asleep, now I can do it all on this one application. Ive heard mixed reviews about the accuracy of the sleep tracking part of this app but honestly, I think it is pretty accurate! I have restless sleep all the time and I am completely aware of what time of the night its happeneing etc and the results on this app have recorded the same findings.
The sleep tracking part of the app works by asking you to place the phone face down on your bed side table, then it records your breathing and analyses that recording to provide you with a recap of how well you slept.
The alarm is by far the application’s best feature. The aim of the alarm is to select a period of time you would like to wake up (example: between 5-6am) and then the alarm goes off when you seem like you will wake up the easiest. This information is provided by the recording of your breathing that the app does. I can honestly say that ever since discovering this application, I have been waking up so much easier and so much better. I truly recommend you give this application a try just for this feature.
4. ASANA REBEL – YOGA INSPIRED FITNESS
Yes, Obviously this application is a yoga-fitness app but honestly, it’s my favourite one that I have found (and I’ve tried a lot of them). When you first begin the app is asks you about your goals and asks you to provide some personal statistics like weight/height/age in order to plan a program for you to try!
I personally am subscribed with the application and therefore have access to all of it’s features, but the free features alone are still incredible. The workouts range from a couple of minutes to an hour+ and are in a range of different styles and difficulties.
This app is incredible for beginner yogis as it provides so much information about the correct form, breathing techniques and even mindful meditations.
5. HEAR AND NOW: BREATHE FOR STRESS & ANXIETY RELIEF
I first downloaded this app because it’s images looked aesthetically pleasing and I was definitely right about that! The app itself is stunning which I think really helps you to focus and calm down when in a state of heightened anxiety. This app provides you with a platform to practice breathing techniques and guided meditations. If you upgrade to the free version, the app also allows you to track your progress and learn different techniques to identify the triggers of your anxiety so that you can avoid them or deal with the anxiety when it is less heightened, preventing panic attacks.
If you are someone who suffers from anxiety, this app will truly help get past those moments that make you feel like your entire world is closing in.
All of these apps that I have mentioned – I personally use on a daily/weekly basis and I truly couldnt recommend them highly enough. All of them have been incorporated in to my daily/weekly wellbeing practices and have definitely helped me better my overall mental and emotional health.
I hope they can be of help to you,
I’d love to hear of other applications you find useful!
